Abstract

In the inaugurating couplet of the ode he wrote in praising King Mahmoud, Farrokhi Sistani talks of his "Mihrgan", "Simorgh" (a legendary bird), and its movement: "Mihrgan arrived and Simorgh changed its place." In the seventh couplet, he identifies Simorgh's movement with that of the king who has, according to him, invaded the world. In the eleventh couplet, he clearly compares Mahmoud to Simorgh, and the other kings to other birds retrospectively. As the sources clarify, Simorgh to which Mahmoud has been compared, has close connection with Fereydun. In this way, they are both related to water and cloud. Just like Simorgh which sits in Alborz mountain, Fereydun passes a part of his life there. Also, both of them are in direct contradiction with dragon (the symbol of drought) and are spreader of the seeds of the plants. Both of them are also related to the sun and healing. Leadership, sorrow-removing, generosity, shadow-making, etc are among the other characteristics of these two creatures. All these, have been attributed to king Mahmoud in Farrokhi Sistani's poem and it is mentioned that in the same ode, Farrokhi, by comparing Mahmoud to Simorgh, would like to attribute all characteristics of Fereydun to him. That is why he mentiones Mehrgan which was first created by Fereydun. As he, himself, directly confesses this powerful king of Ghaznavi is a replacement for Fereydun and is able to behead Zahak-like kings and, that is why, celebrates Mihrgan.
