Abstract

The classic texts including prose and poems are rich cultural heritage from which contemporary writers and poets can build new literary works. Barbad and the death of Shabdiz is one of them that has attracted considerable attention in contemporary poetry. The story was not available in the past centuries and it probably entered into Arabic resources from some ordinary books in late Sassanid era. Following a descriptive methodology, the present article reviews the Barbad character in the classic story of Barbad and the death of Shabdiz and it also studies a number of its adaptations in the contemporary poetry. It is revealed that this story has been elaborated in the present time in three forms: faithful recreation, free adaptation, and implication. Poets with different reasons and motivations such as nationalism, romanticism, breaking the limited loop of implications, focus on musical value as well as heroism have resorted to this story. Hamidi Shirazi and Adib Boroumand have achieved two significant recreations. Needless to say, relying on old stories can provide a situation for creating modern poetry both in form and content.
